Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratios (HSMR)

28th February 2012 :
Scotland is well placed to produce trends in hospital mortality that are inclusive of deaths after discharge due to the routine linkage of all death registrations to central hospital returns on all patient admissions. The Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP) was set a target of achieving a 15% reduction in hospital mortality by December 2012. To monitor this they have been working in partnership with the Quality Improvement Programme at ISD since 2008 on the development of a case-mix adjustment model for Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratios. The current model was finalised during 2009 and a quarterly cycle of updates has now been established to provide HSMRs to all hospitals participating in the SPSP. The same trends and accompanying guidance notes that are produced routinely by ISD and released to the service can be accessed here.

 Surgical Profiles

25th October 2011 :
Surgical Profiles is a collaborative project led by Healthcare Improvement Scotland and the Information Services Division, with support from NHS Boards, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow, and a number of clinical specialty groups.

The surgical profiles project aims to contribute to the development of a culture whereby individuals and organisations providing clinical services routinely use data to stimulate reflective practice and are also accountable for using such information to drive improvements in patient care. The profile presents a suite of clinical indicators at NHS Board and hospital level.

The latest (third) version of the surgical profile was made available to NHS Boards on 29th March 2011. This release puts the statistical data included in the surgical profile into the public domain. The latest version of the Surgical Profiles Project can be accessed here.

Statistical Process Control (SPC)

The Quality Improvement Team previously published an SPC chart package and tutorial guide here. We are currently reviewing and updating the guide and have temporarily removed the package from our site during redevelopment.

We will provide access to the previous package upon request.
